Yummy Snack Alert: Edamame Beans

My biggest post-workout rule is to eat. If you go without fuel after exercise, then the effects can be adverse to what you set out to achieve- even if that was weight loss! It’s really important to get some kind of food into your system and I always opt for a protein rich option. However, that’s sometimes easier said than done.

I live a 45 minute commute away from my gym, meaning that by the time I get home and have a chance to cook I’m one, absolutely starving and two, my body has decided to start burning my muscle. Booo! So it’s really important that I snack straight after my workout to put me on until I can get to a proper meal. I set out to find the perfect snack for after my gym session and came across edamame.

Edamame is a healthy snack packed with protein, meaning that it’s perfect for your post-workout fix or mid-afternoon office lull! There’s around 11g of protein per 100g of edamame, which is more than what some protein products offer, without all of the other added ingredients. It’s a great source of many minerals and is low in fat and sugar. Oh and it tastes pretty nice too! Give them a try and let me know what you think! x

Physalis- The Fruit That You Need To Discover!

You know when you find something that’s absolutely delicious and good for you and you get a little bit too excited? That’s me right now, telling you guys about my favourite fruit. I’ve been a fan of physalis for a while, but to my surprise not all that many people know about it. Well if you haven’t heard of physalis before, you have now…

It’s not exactly a household fruit. In fact, the first time that I came across physalis was actually, typically, as a decoration on my dessert. My gran told me that they were called Chinese lanterns and I went on calling them that for years. That was until I grew up, stumbled across them in the fruit aisle on my food shop and realised they’re not called Chinese lanterns at all. Their real name is physalis.

OK, so they kind of sound like a disease but I promise you that they are absolutely delicious. If you have a sweet tooth, I recommend that you swap your bag of sweets for a bag of these as a healthy alternative! Honestly, they’re that good (ish). Super sweet and super yum, as well as having a number of health benefits such as helping to improve eyesight, protecting the kidney and liver, aiding healthy pregnancy and helping to relieve arthritis pain. I picked mine up at Sainsbury’s for £1 per bag. Give them a try and let me know what you think!

Yummy Snack Alert: Frozen Mango

Every now and then I stumble across a new delicious yet healthy snack to add to the books. This snack may not be new for me but it’s one that I just keep coming back to again and again. It’s also absolutely perfect for the summer season!

Frozen mango. What a babe! Sweet, delicious and the fact that it’s frozen makes it even more satisfactory. It will smash your Haribo and ice cream cravings in one!

All you need to do is chop up a mango (removing the skin of course) and freeze! Or you can buy pre-frozen mango at most supermarkets. Yum!

So if you’ve got a sweet tooth that you find hard to keep under control, or even if you’re simply looking for a tasty summer snack, frozen mango may just be for you. x

Yummy Snack Alert: Peanut Butter On Apple!

Snacking is a major part of leading a healthy lifestyle. It’s important in order to keep your metabolism running (and hence burn more calories) and also to keep you energised throughout the day. However, when it comes down to what to snack on, it can be rather challenging.

Snacks all add up as part of your daily calorie, fat, salt, sugar intake, which means that what we eat between meals can really affect our overall diet. Personally, I find that when I’m bored I’ll head straight to the fridge- even if I’m not hungry! This can be super dangerous if the fridge is packed with not-so-healthy temptations. So I decided to set up the regular Tigeress Yummy Snack Alert- snacks that you can enjoy without feeling guilty!

Today’s Yummy Snack Alert, peanut butter on apple, is one of my faves. Delicious, one of your five a day and filling. This is definitely a winner. Simply slice your apple, spread your peanut butter and there you have it- fruity goodness with a kick of tummy-loving protein!

Peanut butter makes you feel fuller for longer, improves energy levels and is great for your bowel, while the natural sugars in apples are great for a healthy sugar boost. This is also a particularly good one if you’re trying to reduce carbs. Give it a try and see what you think. Enjoy! xx
